DDMSWCF Assembles Local Volunteers to Assist with Cleaning Up the Typhoon Morakot Aftermath in Southern and Eastern Taiwan

Typhoon Morakot that stormed Taiwan from 7 to 9 August 2009 and has inflicted major flooding to southern and eastern Taiwan, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless and brought them heartbreaking losses, especially for villagers inhabiting in Pingtung County, Tainan County, Kaohsiung County and Taitung County.

On 8 August, Dharma Drum Mountain and Social Welfare Foundation (DDMSWCF) initiated emergency relief programs to help distressed villagers in cleaning up of the aftermath, rebuilding their homes and providing support where necessary.

In addition to distributing drinking water, sleeping bags, instant noodles, lunch boxes and flash lights for local shelters, DDMSWCF has further assembled local volunteers through local affiliates island-wide to assist victims in cleaning the muddy houses and the noxious odors from within as well as the devastated surroundings left behind by the typhoon.

The cleaning teams are led by Venerables of the DDM Sangha Community who have been working in Linbian Township and Jiatung Township of Pintung County from 12 August.

DDMSWCF initiates emergency relief programs in southern Taiwan

On August 9 2009 Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan, continuing for a period of 3 days. The damages inflicted, particularly to southern provinces of Taiwan, were catastrophic.

In the attempt to assist with recovery from the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot, Dharma Drum Mountain Social Welfare and Charity Foundation (DDMSWCF) quickly initiated emergency relief programs.

These programs focused particularly on offering sufferers of the typhoon temporary relief measures, such as the provision of drinking water, sleeping bags and lunch boxes on a daily basis.

DDMSWCF’s Vice Secretary General Chang Fa said DDMSWCF’s abundant experience in providing emergency relief in the past will assist victims in acquiring drinking water, food and necessary amenities. DDMSWCF will continue their relief efforts in collaboration with local governments, to provide relief services and to assist in the cleanup of dirt and litter left by the Typhoon Morakot.
